Monthly Reflections from The Gothic Descent Library
We mostly live within a linear social system, but our inner worlds are anything but linear.
Like dreams, myths, and Gothic stories, the unconscious often speaks through symbols, atmospheres, fragments, and recurring images that resist immediate explanation. Yet these symbolic traces constantly leak into daily life from the moment we wake up.
The Descent is a free monthly newsletter exploring the intersections between Gothic literature, symbolic thought, dreams, culture, memory, and contemporary life through a deeply personal, yet academically grounded lens.
Rooted in the emotional and cultural atmosphere of each month, these reflections trace the ways certain themes return cyclically through literature, film, music, grief, embodiment, social experience, and the strange persistence of particular images and moods over time.
What You Will Find
Each issue includes:
Reflections on the symbolic atmosphere and recurring themes surrounding a particular time of year
Explorations of Gothic literature, film, television, music, and contemporary culture in connection with their historical roots
Notes from my ongoing research, readings, dreams, and writing process
Curated works, overlooked voices, and rhizomatic connections across different artistic forms
Personal reflections on memory, fragmentation, motherhood, grief, and symbolic experience in contemporary life
Explorations of how living within a culture of “happycracy” often distances us from the full complexity of being alive
Why Subscribe
This newsletter is an invitation to remain with the discomfort of exploring beyond what we have been taught to see, feel and follow.
Stories are never mere entertainment. Sometimes they become a form of resistance when the world becomes overwhelming, alienating, or emotionally impoverished.
Certain books, films, songs, and artistic works seem to find us precisely when we need them most. And when we emotionally recognise ourselves through the voices behind these creations, something deeply human takes place.
Bodies change. Jobs disappear. Relationships end. People die.
Yet the emotional and symbolic connections we establish through artistic creation often outlive us.
When certain images, atmospheres, and narratives continue echoing within us long after we encounter them, something shifts. Our inner world expands, and the way we perceive ourselves and reality becomes more layered, complex, and alive.
The Descent exists for readers, creators, students, researchers, and curious minds drawn to:
-
Gothic thought
-
Symbolic interpretation
-
Dreams and archetypes
-
Emotionally layered storytelling
-
Non-linear and associative ways of thinking
-
The hidden structures connecting art, psyche, and lived experience
