Motherhood & Horror

Motherhood & Horror

How does motherhood become a horror experience?

Motherhood is often imagined through images of nurture, protection and sacrifice.

What happens when lived experience unsettles those images, when care coexists with fear, ambivalence, loss or a changing sense of self?

This catacomb explores how Gothic literature and horror represent experiences of motherhood that are difficult to express or recognise within its accepted cultural narratives.

Inside This Catacomb

Monstrous mothers, haunted homes and unsettling children bring questions of care, identity and belonging into view. We ask whose experience a story allows us to encounter: the mother’s, the child’s, or the community’s judgment of them.

The mother who experiences horror and the mother represented as its source are not necessarily the same figure. Reading that distinction allows us to examine how stories express maternal suffering, challenge expectations or reproduce fears about women and their desires.

Grief runs through this investigation: reproductive loss, bereavement, interrupted relationships and the loss of an expected future. We explore what happens when these experiences find little room for recognition, and how Gothic images give them a presence.

Jungian images of the nurturing and devouring mother offer one perspective on these tensions. We place that reading alongside the work’s narrative choices and cultural context, without treating fictional figures as diagnoses of real mothers.

Questions We Explore

  • Who is permitted to speak about the unsettling aspects of motherhood, and who is judged for doing so?

  • What happens when the expectation to nurture leaves little space for a mother’s own needs or transformation?

  • How do Gothic stories represent reproductive loss and maternal grief?

  • When does the monstrous mother challenge cultural expectations, and when does she reinforce them?

My essay brings personal experience, motherhood and loss into dialogue with Gothic-Jungian thought. It offers a starting point for exploring what remains within us when an experience finds neither words nor recognition.
