You Are Gothic, But You Don’t Know It is a Gothic literature magazine that brings our experiences into conversation with literature, symbolism and psychological thought.
The Places That Hold Us and the Ghosts They Leave Behind
Why are we drawn to the Gothic? In this autumn issue, we explore some possible answers through the places that shape us, the parts of ourselves that go unrecognised and the relationships that change during our absence.
Three interconnected articles guide us through this journey:
Alma Mater. The Devouring Container. The education system becomes our starting point for exploring the tension between needing protection and belonging and finding the freedom to grow.
When Belonging Means Leaving Something Out. The Home as a Producer of Social Ghosts. Haunted houses invite us to think about what we silence, hide or have barely had the opportunity to discover about ourselves.
Mary Winchester. When the Mother Figure Becomes a Ghost, a Memory and a Social Expectation. Through Supernatural, we explore the distance between the person who returns and the image their loved ones have preserved.
This issue also introduces the Cartography of the Catacombs: five questions that will accompany us in future issues, bringing our experiences into conversation with literature, the Gothic and psychological thought.
An invitation to read slowly, make connections and consider what you recognise of your own experience in these stories. You can begin with this issue without having read the previous one.
